Our History

1976, Opening the doors

Richard J. Knapp & Associates P.C. was a private practice with emphasis on real estate, business litigation, criminal and divorce work.

1998, New office location

The small law firm opened a new office on Patterson Avenue in the Fan district of Richmond, VA. The practice focused on corporate and business law, litigation, estate planning, and real estate.

2015, Edith Curry joined the practice
2017, Moved Offices

Richard J. Knapp & Associates, P.C. relocated to our current office located at 1910 Byrd Avenue, Suite 5 in Richmond, VA and doubled in employee headcount.

2021, Justin Geyer joined the practice

Final Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Rule on Banning Non-Compete Agreements

On May 7, 2024, the FTC officially published its final rule banning non-compete agreements between employers and workers and non-compete policies contained in employee handbooks. The rule defines a "worker" to include employees and independent contractors, externs, interns, volunteers, apprentices, or a sole proprietor who provides a service. The final rule applies retroactively, and most workers' existing non-competes will no longer be enforceable after the final rule's effective date of September 4, 2024.
